Trayless Tuesdays

Fort Lewis College has been experimenting with a method of reducing our food waste, Trayless Tuesdays. The Environmental Center is always looking for ways to actively help lessen the college’s impact on the environment. That is why we have started Trayless Tuesdays. The goal behind Trayless Tuesdays is, quite simply, to lessen the amount of unused or uneaten food that is thrown away. The goal is not to lessen the amount of water that is lost due to cleaning trays, as many seem to think.

Schools across the United States have participated in Trayless Tuesdays, and many of them experienced similar complaints and difficulties as we are experiencing here. All of these schools, however, have shown reduction in their waste production.

One of greatest issues that seems to be against us in this endeavor is that many feel that the use of a tray is vital to the proper fueling of their bodies. We understand that you have all grown accustomed to using trays since you have come for Fort Lewis College. But, do you really need a tray to feed yourself? I can guarantee that most, if not all of you, did not use a tray while you were living with your family. Miraculously you survived for around 18 years without the use of a tray.

The point of going to College is to learn new skills and to be confronted with new ways of thinking so try to keep an open mind. We are trying to make a difference in the waste production of our campus and to do so there is a need for change.
